CPM 473/673: Polymer Synthesis (each fall semester)

Description: Chemical synthesis of all types of polymers, including the understanding and tailoring of materials formed by these high molecular weight molecules. Polymers have unique properties due to their conformation and high molecular mass, and are used in a wide variety of applications from paints to structural, engineering materials.

Course objective: to provide students with an understanding of reactions and reaction mechanisms involved in polymer synthesis and the kinetics of these reactions, to teach basic concepts of polymer chain formation. In  addition, graduate  students will  learn how  to  design  and  put  together  a  manuscript  on  topic related  to polymer  synthesis in  ACS  journal(guideline  for  paper  writing with  all  information will  be provided).

CPM 778: Physical Chemistry of Polymers (each even spring semester)

Description: The physical polymer chemistry describes the interrelationships among polymer structure, morphology, and physical and mechanical behavior. Key aspects include molecular weight and molecular weight distribution, and the organization of the atoms down the polymer chain.

Course objectives: i.) to study structure and properties of varying by chemical composition macromolecules as a function of synthetic, application and storage conditions, ii.) to study how properties of macromolecules depend on chemical composition and structure of macromolecules, inter- and intramolecular interaction, environment and presence of other components.

CPM 483/683: Polymer Practicum (since Spring 2013)

Description: The course focuses on key synthetic methods for polymer synthesis, reaction kinetics, and the characterization methods. Students will be introduced to basic lab skills and the analytical tools used to synthesize and characterize macromolecules.

Course objective: to teach students how to achieve a hands-on acquaintance with important classical laboratory techniques of synthesis and characterization of macromolecules to learn the specifics of experimental design in polymer chemistry, analysis, interpretation and evaluation of data, and effective communication of findings in the form of laboratory reports

CPM:782 Physical Chemistry of Coatings (each odd fall semester, team teaching)

Description: This course describes the basic and advanced topics of material interactions occurring at surfaces and interfaces in relation to organic coatings.

Course objective: to provide graduate students with an understanding of concepts of surface and interfacial phenomena pertaining to coatings, and to teach basic concepts of colloids, micro- and nanoparticulate materials and their interaction with solid surfaces. In addition, graduate students will learn how to write and present a scientific review manuscript on a topic related to the physical chemistry of coatings in ACS style (guideline for paper writing with all information will be provided), and communicate the content to the class in the form of PowerPoint presentation.
