Ukrainian Summer Undergraduate Student joins our group

Bohdan Domnich, B.Sc. from Lviv Polytechnic National University joins our group in January 2021 to work for 10 weeks as Ukrainian Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (USURE) fellow. Bohdan was selected to participate in this program during Summer 2020, but his arrival has been delayed due to COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019 Bohdan got a degree in Chemical Technologies from his home institution. His research project at NDSU relates to studying highly biobased latex adhesives with a goal of testing resulted polymeric materials on multiple substrates.

In accordance with signed Memorandum of Understanding between Lviv Polytechnic National University and NDSU, Summer Undergraduate Research Experience in USA (USURE) program for Ukrainian students is in its 4th active year.

New International Students Exchange Program at Coatings and Polymeric Materials Department

In accordance with signed Memorandum of Understanding between Lviv Polytechnic National University and NDSU, Summer Undergraduate Research Experience in USA (USURE) program for Ukrainian students has been inaugurated during summer 2018. NDSU Department of Coatings and Polymeric Materials (CPM) offers research internships for Ukrainian students in their senior year majoring food chemistry, chemical engineering and related fields as well as first- or second-year graduate students in Polymer Science/Physical Chemistry and related fields.

Two applicants, Yehor Polunin and Andrii Tiara have been selected in 2018 and joined the CPM for 10 weeks beginning June, 8. At their home institution, Yehor and Andrii are both studying Chemical Engineering with specialization Organic Products Technology (Yehor) and Chemical Technologies of Food Additives and Cosmetics (Andrii). Yehor received his B.Sc. degree in 2018. Andrii is in his academic year of Master in progress.

At NDSU, Yehor works in Voronov’s research group under supervision of Zoriana Demchuk while Andrii is working under supervision of Alison Rohly in Dr. Webster’s group. On August,3, 2018, Yehor and Andrii participated in NDSU Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium where they presented posters entitled Synthesis, Characterization and Miniemulsion Polymerization of  High-Linoleic Soybean Oil-Based Monomer (Yehor) and Biobased Epoxy Thermosets from Vanillin –Schiff bases (Andrii).

The USURE now accepts applications from Ukrainian students for summer 2019. For more details in Ukrainian language, http://lp.edu.ua/opportunities/2017/naukovo-doslidnycke-stazhuvannya-studentiv-lvivskoyi-politehniky-v-ssha-usure

2018 Summer Undergraduate Student joins our group

Hermella Eshete, junior from University of Southern Mississippi joins our group end of May to work for 10 weeks as Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) fellow.hermella.jpg

Hermella is majoring Biochemistry. Her research project at NDSU relates to study on feasibility of copolymerization of vinyl monomers from plant oils (developed in our group) with cardanol-based monomers and further developing fully biobased latexes. This is an ongoing collaborative effort with Dr.Sylvain Caillol from French National Centre for Scientific Research, Effect of monomer ratio in reaction feed on cross-linking degree and properties of latex polymer films will be studied. At NDSU, Hermella works under supervision of Zoriana Demchuk.

SURE program is operated by Coatings and Polymeric Materials Department to provide undergraduate students (usually juniors and seniors) the opportunity to experience a research environment and to encourage them to pursue a higher degree. Coatings and Polymeric Materials offers this program each year. The program serves in educating the next generation of specialists in the field of polymers and coatings, as many students who attend this program go on to graduate school at NDSU, in this department. For more details and/or to apply for next year SURE program, https://www.ndsu.edu/cpm/summer_undergraduate_research_experience/

Summer Undergraduate Students join our group

Ekaterina Voytsekhovskaya, junior from Minnesota State University Mankato, and Joseph Domine, senior from St.Mary’s University of Minnesota join our group end of May to work for 10 weeks as Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) fellow. Ekaterina will share her time by working 4 weeks in Dr. Rasulev group at Coatings and Polymeric Materials.

Ekaterina is majoring Chemistry. Her research project at NDSU relates to study on effect of unsaturation in vinyl monomer from plant oils on cross-linking degree and properties of polymer films made from plant oil-based monomers copolymerized with styrene. At NDSU, she works under supervision of Zoriana Demchuk.

Joe is majoring Physics. At CPM, he works with Oksana Zholobko on a project related to synthesis of copolymers for enzyme conjugation and application of conjugates in bioconversion of cellulose. Joe studies how molecular weight and composition of the copolymers might impact the enzyme conjugation and, respectively, the activity of conjugated systems in hydrolysis reaction.
