Oleh Shevchuk returns as Visiting Scholar

Dr. Oleh Shevchuk from Lviv Polytechnic National University joins our group in February to work for about 4 months as Visiting Short-Term Scholar.

Oleh is employed works as Associate Professor at Department of Organic Chemistry of National University Lviv Polytechnic, Lviv, Ukraine. This will be his 5th visit to NDSU, whereas he has been visiting Voronov’s group in 2016 – 2021. Oleh will be working on synthesis and characterization of adhesives based on plan oils-based monomers while helping graduate students with their other projects   

Svitlana joins as Visiting Scholar

Svitlana Trotsenko who was working as Research Associate at Department of Physics, Institute of Experimental Physics of Free University Berlin, Germany joins our group in February to work for about 5 months as Visiting Scientist .

Svitlana got her BS in Chemical Engineering from Lviv Polytechnic National University in Lviv, Ukraine and worked as Research Associate at Department of Organic Chemistry of the same institution before she was hired by FU Berlin.  This is Svitlana’s first time at NDSU. Her current research project at NDSU relates to synthesis of plant oil-based latex adhesives using miniemulsion process with a goal of developing latexes formulations feasible for industrial applications .

Ukrainian Summer Undergraduate Student joins our group

Bohdan Domnich, B.Sc. from Lviv Polytechnic National University joins our group in January 2021 to work for 10 weeks as Ukrainian Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (USURE) fellow. Bohdan was selected to participate in this program during Summer 2020, but his arrival has been delayed due to COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019 Bohdan got a degree in Chemical Technologies from his home institution. His research project at NDSU relates to studying highly biobased latex adhesives with a goal of testing resulted polymeric materials on multiple substrates.

In accordance with signed Memorandum of Understanding between Lviv Polytechnic National University and NDSU, Summer Undergraduate Research Experience in USA (USURE) program for Ukrainian students is in its 4th active year.

New Funding Received

New funding of up to $58,463 is received from NSF IUCRC Center for Bioplastics and Biocomposites for the project “Plan Oil-Based Latex Adhesives” (Year 2) (in collaboration with Dr. G.Pourhashem, Coatings and Polymeric Materials). This is renewal of the ongoing project. Year 2 work begins on January,1,2021 and is for one year. This is a new research project aiming developing plant-based latex adhesives for multiple substrates.

Three Papers Published

Our work, Effect of highly hydrophobic plant oil-based monomers on micellization of sodium dodecyl sulfate (authors, Kingsley, K., Shevchuk, O., Voronov, S., Voronov, A.) is published in Colloids and Surfaces A: Physicochemical and Engineering Aspects (Elsevier). This journal publishes research underlying applications of colloids and interfacial phenomena and features new materials or new insights into the role of colloid and interface science in food, energy, minerals processing, pharmaceuticals or the environment. This journal covers synthesis, characterization, and application of particles in a variety of systems and devices, including nanotubes, fullerenes, micelles, organic and inorganic materials, polymers, proteins, and other molecular biological systems, also those in biomedicine, catalysis, environmental science, micro/nano-fluidics, molecular electronics, photonics, sensing, Other work, Synergistic Effects of Cardanol- and High Oleic Soybean Oil Vinyl Monomers in Miniemulsion Polymers (authors Z. Demchuk, W. S. J.Li, H. Eshete, S. Caillol, A.Voronov) is accepted for publication in ACS Sustainable Chemistry and Engineering, This journal addresses research on sustainability in the chemical enterprise and advance principles of Green Chemistry and Green Engineering, including green chemistry, green manufacturing and engineering, biomass or wastes as resources, alternative energy, life-cycle assessment.

Our work, Dual role of methyl-β-cyclodextrin in the emulsion polymerization of highly hydrophobic plant oil-based monomers with various unsaturations (authors Kohut, A., Demchuk, Z., Kingsley, K., Voronov, S., Voronov, A.) is published in European Polymer Journal (Elsevier). This journal is publishing work on fundamental and applied polymer chemistry and macromolecular materials, covers all aspects of polymer synthesis, including polymerization mechanisms and chemical functional transformations, with a focus on novel polymers. Other work, Inversion of Polymeric Micelles Probed by Spin Labeled Peptide Incorporation and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (authors Y.Pan, O. This journal publishes research articles which provide new physical insights, in particular in the field of nanoparticles and nanostructures, surfaces, interfaces, and catalysis.
